We are pleased to offer classes in two locations starting this fall! We will continue to offer classes in Northfield at the Northfield High School Gym, but we will also start classes in St. Louis Park at the St Louis Park Junior High School. Each site registration is hosted through the local Community Education offices. Anyone is welcome to register for either or both classes. The proceeds for class registration goes entirely towards the community education programs as payment for our use of a the gym space.
St Louis Park classes are held on Saturdays from 11:30am - 2:30pm at the St Louis Park Junior High School gym. Please register for St Louis Park classes at the St Louis Park Community Education website. The fall session for SLP starts on September 17th and continues through November 19th. See our practice schedule for schedule details.
In addition to the class registration, everyone must become members of the Minnesota Kyudo Renmei ($20 annual membership). Beginners are also encouraged to purchase a gomu-yumi, or practice bow that will be instrumental in the first stages of studying kyudo. We can sell you a gomu-yumi for $25 when you arrive at class.
Feel free to contact us if you have questions at any time at info@mnkyudo.org. |

The AKR 2011 tournament was completed successfully and safely the evening of August 2, 2011. We had 72 participants (the largest AKR tournament ever!) and were divided into 3 shajo. We started at 7:00pm, finished closing Rei by 8:50pm, and exited the Rec Center at 9:03pm, just 3 minutes over our allotted time. Both because of the strict time limit for the tournament, imposed by the College facility, and because we wanted to allow as many seminar attendees to participate in the tournament as possible, we modified the standard tournament timing to "kai-uchiokoshi" timing. This meant that everything moved along pretty quickly. We also eliminated Yawatashi performance, and for tie-breaking, we eliminated the izume in favor of enkin in the interest of time. Most people thououghly enjoyed the tournament experience, and I extend my sincere thanks to the dojo assistants and target judges that kept us on track with the fast tournament timing pace. A few participants seemed uncomfortable with the quick pace. To those who found the timing uncomfortable, please practice tournament timing in your home dojo as often as possible. Try standard tournament timing; also, try kai-uchiokoshi timing. There are times when the situation of the event demands that we keep to a strict time schedule, and we need to be able to maintain Heijoshin (everyday mind) even under pressure. Congratulations to those that achieved the highest number of hits in the tournament! The winners were awarded with gift certificates to be spent at the kyudo equipment vendors, Sambu or Takahashi, that were present at the AKR 2011 seminar. Winners from B Group (Nidan and below): #1 Yukiko Itokawa (7 hits) #2 Audrey Yang (4 hits, and winner of enkin) #3 Cesar Ortiz Rojas (4 hits) Winners from A Group (Sandan and above) #1 Fumiko Takada (5 hits, and winner of enkin) #2 Eric Ruth (5 hits) #3 David Boswell (4 hits, and winner of enkin with 2 others with 4 hits) Thank you to everyone for your sincere support for the tournament, especially the dojo assistants (Yoshiko Buchanan sensei, Eric Kong, Miho Oyasu, Rik Center), the target judges (Steve Scott sensei, Daniel Kim, Andrew Platzer, Bill Reid), the MNKR and the AKR. Respectfully submitted, Maria Peterson AKR 2011 Tournament Coordinator |

Many may have already heard that the shinsa (rank examination) application that was originally posted and distributed was an older version than what the IKYF wants us to use. The correct version has now been posted to this website, as well as sent via email to all Renmei presidents. If you cannot download the new version from here, please contact your renmei president for a copy.
- Those testing for kyu-5th dan who have already submitted the old form of the shinsa application will be 'grand-fathered' in and will not be required to complete a new form.
- However, those testing for renshi MUST submit their application with the new form.
- On the new form, use the For Official Use space below your name to write your name in Japanese.
Please feel free to contact us at seminar@mnkyudo.org if you have any further questions. |

Dear AKR Federation Presidents, First of all I and Carly Born sensei would like to clarify that the 2011 American Kyudo Seminar will take place as scheduled. The EKF seminar was canceled because of financial problems among the European Kyudo federation. It was not canceled because of the latest earthquake disaster in Japan. We would like to ask all the federation presidents to explain to their members and make sure that your members understand the two different events that the ANKF is taking care of. I apologize for my inappropriate wording to announce the news of the EKF seminar cancellation. I have, in fact, received some words from the ANKF a few days ago and they are about to tell us the names of the seminar instructors and the names of the kyudo equipment vendors (I think there will be two vendors) . However because of the unexpected situation that is affecting the Japanese nation in its entirely they have been very busy right now for making changes to the ANKF schedules. Second of all I would like to thank you very much for your concern, thoughts and support to the region and people that have been deeply and sadly affected by the Tohoku-Kanto Great earthquake. I thank Blackwell sensei who has been coordinating to raise Japan relief funds and the support that has been shown by all the AKR federations. I would like to report that the "Omimai from the AKR" is posted to the ANKF web site. You are encouraged to send your own, as a federation, message to the ANKF. Many of you remember Dr. Yokoyama who provided great help to a few of the AKR federations in the earlier time of the AKR history. He is one of the earthquake/tsunami victims but he is well. I spoke with him yesterday. He still does makiwara practice even in such a situation. No ANKF senseis have been reported injured or lost so far. In closing I want to thank the MNKR for their hard work. They are hosting a seminar for the first time in their experience and I respect their courage and making efforts for us to provide the place and time to study Yumi all together. We again would like to ask all of you to convey this message to your members and encourage them to attend the 2011 American seminar. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this matter. Sincerely, Carly Born, MNKR president / 2011 American kyudo seminar host Yoshiko Buchanan, AKR president
